Student Entry Directions for the 2012, 60th Reading-Berks Science and Engineering Fair

Location: Albright College Bollman Gym , 13th and Bern St., Reading, PA

Entry Fee: $10.00 per student, (Some schools may pay this fee)

2012 Fair Schedule:

Tues. Feb. 14 – Due Date - for fair registration, signed required forms, fees

Mon. March 12- Project Setup, 6-8PM, Albright College Bollman Gym

Tue. March 13 – 1pm – 3pm - Student Interviews, Albright BollmanGym

Wed. March 14- 9am-7pm, Public/ student viewing of projects Albright Bollman Gym

7:30pm-9:30pm – Awards Ceremony, Albright College Chapel

Thur. March 15 – 9am – 3pm Public/student viewing of projects Albright Bollman Gym

5pm-7:30pm – Project Removal from gym (projects will be discarded after 8pm)

Science Fair Entry Directions

1. Go to the Reading Berks Science and Engineering website (www.rbsef.org) to register online. For students in (Grades 6-8 Junior Division) follow the directions for number 2 below. For students in (Grades 9-12 Senior Division) follow the directions for number 3 on page 2.

NOTE: If you register online you must printout the registration form and other required forms for the project before you leave the website so that parents/guardians and a teacher can sign the forms. Give the completed and signed forms to your teacher to send to the fair. You will not be registered in the science fair if you just fill out forms on the website. Hardcopy forms must be printed out, signed and then sent to the science fair.

2. Gr. 6 – 8 (Junior Division) registration directions - Students must register online using the fair website at (www.rbsef.org). Students must complete the required forms listed under A. and B. below.

Reminder, before leaving the fair website, print out all the completed required forms for signatures by a teacher/sponsor and a parent/guardian. Read all the directions before entering any information.

Special Note (only for grade 6-8): If numbered items 4 and 6 on "Checklist for Adult Sponsor Form 1" do not need to be checked off for your project topic you are finished with the entry paperwork for the fair. However, if number items 4 and 6 need to be checked off in Form (1) the student needs to follow the directions for Gr. 9-12 (Senior Division) found on page 2.

Note: Go to page 2 and read items 4 (forms check) and 5 (local fair display rules).

3. Gr. 9-12 (Senior Division) registration directions - Students must complete registration online on the fair website at (www.rbsef.org). After completing the required forms, print out the forms for signatures by a teacher/sponsor and a parent/guardian. The required forms are listed below in items A – E. For the "Registration Form" – on the fair website home page prompt "Registration" then prompt "Register Here". For other forms, on the fair website home page prompt "RBSEF Forms" then prompt "Required Forms" or "Document Library" to find the form(s) you need. Read all the directions before entering any information. Reminder, print out all completed required forms for signatures before leaving the website.

B. Checklist For Adult Sponsor (1) - (on fair website prompt "RBSEF Forms" then prompt "Required Forms" or prompt "Document Library"

C. Student Checklist (1A) (Prompt "RBSEF Forms" then "Required Forms" or prompt "Document Library"

D. Research Plan Attachment (Note: Abstract is optional), on website prompt "RBSEF Forms" then prompt "Required Forms" or prompt "Document Library"

Approval Form (1B) – on fair website prompt "RBSEF Forms" then prompt "Required Forms" or prompt "Document Library"

4. IMPORTANT – (For all grades) - To determine if other forms may be required for your project topic, prompt " RBSEF Forms" then prompt "Wizard". This forms "wizard" will list additional forms that may be required for your topic other than the forms listed here.

5. Where Do I Find The Required Forms and Fair Rules and Regulations?

Required Forms Locations: Go to the fair website at www.rbsef.org,

For the Student Registration Form – on the fair home website prompt "Registration" then prompt "Register Here" Complete form online, hit submit and print out for required signatures. Read all directions on the page before you start!

Other required forms - on fair site prompt "RBSEF Forms" then prompt "Required Forms" or "Document Library". Forms can be filled out online and then printed out or printed blank to fill in by hand.

Local FAIR RULES AND REGULATIONS: On fair website prompt "Regulations" then read:

"Complete Rules" – all fair information, project sizes, categories, prohibited items, a must read!

"Exhibit Rules" – project size limits, suggestions for a good project

"Eligibility" – who is eligible and project classification descriptions

"Safety and Display"All students must read this - lists prohibited items Not Allowed in the fair.

THE FOLLOWING ITEMS ARE PROHIBITED AND UNACCEPTABLE FOR DISPLAY AND CANNOT BE ALLOWED IN THE FAIR: PLEASE DO NOT BRING THEM TO THE FAIR!

Living Organisms - e.g. live plants, animals, microbes (bacteria), fungi (mushrooms)

Suggestion: use photographs or drawings

DRIED PLANT MATERIALS

TAXIDERMY SPECIMENS OR PARTS

PRESERVED VERTEBRATES OR INVERTEBRATE ANIMALS INCLUDING EMBRYOS

HUMAN OR ANIMAL FOOD (suggestion: use empty container of product or picture)

HUMAN/ANIMAL PARTS (Exceptions: teeth, hair, nails, dried animal bones, histological dry mount sections, wet mount tissue slides)

SOIL OR WASTE SAMPLES (suggestion: use art materials to simulate sample)

ALL CHEMICALS, INCLUDING WATER, SOAPS, PAINTS, MAKE UP, SHAMPOO ETC. (suggestion: use the empty container or art supplies to simulate the product)

POISONS, DRUGS, CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES, HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES OR DEVICES SUCH AS FIREARMS, WEAPONS, AMMUNITION, RELOADING DEVICES Suggestion: use pictures

DRY ICE OR OTHER SUBLIMATING SOLIDS (solids which vaporize directly into a gas)

SHARP OBJECTS (syringes, needles, pipettes, any sharp pointed objects on a display )

FLAMES OR HIGHLY FLAMMABLE DISPLAY MATERIALS

EMPTY TANKS OR CONTAINERS THAT CONTAINED COMBUSTIBLE LIQUIDS OR GASES, unless purged with carbon dioxide

BATTERIES WITH OPEN TOP CELLS (ok to use 1.5 v flashlight battery)

AWARDS, MEDALS, BUSINESS CARDS, FLAGS, CORPORATE, INSTITUTION LOGOS ETC.

PHOTOGRAPHS OR OTHER VISUAL PRESENTATIONS DEPICTING VERTEBRATE ANIMALS IN OTHER THAN NORMAL CONDITIONS (ie. Surgical techniques, dissections, necropsies or other lab techniques done on animals)

UNACCEPTABLE FOR DISPLAY: (CANNOT BE OPERATED)

PROJECTS WITH unshielded belts, pulleys, chains and moving parts with tension or pinch points

Class III and IV Lasers

Any device requiring over 110 volts

The Reading Berks Science and Engineering Inc. will reject a project if in its opinion it is not safe or which constitutes a hazard in a public exhibition or to the building.
